What I Wore: Grumpy Old Gran

So this weekend was filled with lots and lots of activity. Grandma continues to be good. Ben and I went and visited her on Saturday. She was uncomfortable, and really tired. Every time she fell asleep, something beeped, or somebody came in and woke her up. I guess exhaustion makes my grandma a little bit xenophobic. Her nurse was a very nice older lady with an accent, and while she was explaining something to her, grandma turned to me and said “I don’t understand why they can’t get anybody who speaks English in this place.” I felt terrible for the poor nurse who was doing everything. I should have apologized when we left, but she looked busy, so I just thanked her. Lots of other stuff happened, this was a long weekend preceded by an even longer week. I had a lot of fun, but I’m actually a little glad to be going back to work.

Welcome to Pug: Introduction

One day Ben and I were at Target, and in the home decorating section there was an 8 foot tall image of a pug that said “Welcome home.” We thought that the poster was indicating that the pug was saying “welcome home” so we started talking in a German accent, saying all the things we thought the pug would say. Eventually this morphed into me narrating a fashion/lifestyle show hosted by an aggressively German pug. Thus: Welcome to Pug was born.

Sometime between conception and production, Pug became more French than German, but whatever. Here’s the first (and maybe the only) episode of Welcome to Pug, a fashion/lifestyle show dedicated to your betterment.

Your response may or may not have some influence on whether or not I make more episodes. This was actually kind of labor intensive.

What I Wore: Photoshoot

So, I totally didn’t realize that I have only one crappy full body shot of this outfit until right now. So I guess it’s just a study of my tired, adorable mug. OH WELL!

My Horizontal Lines

Ever since I rediscovered this shirt at the bottom of my laundry hamper, I’ve been totally in love with it. It’s so comfortable and soft and fits great. You’re probably going to be seeing a lot more of it in the future.

In a move completely uncharacteristic of me, I got my first mani-pedi this week. Not bad. I’m not sure if it’s worth the $35 plus tip I paid for it, but it was a fun experience. And my nails were pretty for awhile.

What I Wore: Fire Engine

Whenever I try to be sexy, I end up looking like I have a developmental disability. In all of these pictures, I have a splitting headache. Most of them are of me taking my clothes off because I feel miserable and want to get into bed. Can anyone tell me why the sexiest pictures I’ve ever taken are of me in horrible pain? Oh well. The headache is gone now and I look amazing in these.

Okay, so maybe this one doesn’t look so great, but it’s the only one Ben got of the whole outfit before I started undressing.

Thanks to a blown fuse in our building, we were without Internet for a couple of days. I have pictures backed up, but none of them are online right now, so here’s a back-up day.

What I Wore: Christmas Cloak

As you may or may not know, I am in Western Oregon for Christmas, where it is cold and windy in a way that I am completely unfamiliar with. I decided that this year, I would not be cold, which is a challenge because I hate clothes and the grabby nature of clothes. My friend suggested that I make a wrap, and this is what came out of that initial intention.

This awesome Christmas Cloak is made from fabric I bought at SAS Fabrics in Hawthorne. That store is amazing. They have shelves and shelves piled high with $2.00 a pound fabric, including the outside panels for this awesome cloak. The fur lining is the fake fur equivalent of rabbit (soooo soft), and it was only $8.00 a yard.

The cloak can be worn three basic styles. I call them warm, cold and freezing. Here you see me demonstrating the freezing option.

I’m an amateur seamstress at best, and my biggest problem with this project was just dealing with the massive amounts of fabric. The trickiest sewing situation was the hood, as it’s a multi-planar seam. I just sewed the flat parts first, leaving the curves for last, which really helped me construct them better.

Following no particular pattern (the process is recreated below to the best of my ability), I made one cloak out of fur and one out of red fabric, then sewed them both together. Because the fur was slippery, I basted, or sewed them together by hand very sloppily before machine sewing so that the pieces would stay together when I did bring out the machine. It’s good to keep the sloppy stitches as close to the edge of the fabric as possible so that you can easily go next to them with the machine and they won’t show when the coat is turned out.

After sewing the two pieces together most of the way, I made sure to leave a hole about 4 inches wide through which I pulled the cloak inside-out. That way the seam was nicely tucked inside the two panels and then I stitched up the hole by hand. Pulling an entire cloak through a 4 inch hole can be tiring and time consuming, especially since you have to go slow and pull gently so that nothing rips. Once it was right-side out, I placed the buttons by wrapping the cloak around me and using safety pins as markers.

That last bit of text in the pattern was written in a rush and should actually say: “Sew the hood onto the opening, half of it on one side and half of it on the other. This creates the hood and the lapels.” The red zig zags are meant to indicate the sewing of those pieces onto the other piece. The quarter-circle panels started with the exact dimensions of the semi-circle, but I cut that semicircle in half in order for the cloak to open in the front.

What I Wore: Tartare

Today was supposed to be the first of a series rainy days in LA that didn’t materialize, but I dug out my old boots anyway just in case. No need to get caught in the rain with wet socks. Anyway, this blog is called Tartare because we went to Cecconi’s for our department holiday lunch and that was our appetizer. It was the first time I had steak tartare, and man is it delicious. My previous raw meat experience is all sushi, so I was expecting to have to chew a lot more, but Steak tartare is like pâté if pâté was good and not utterly disgusting.
