Drawing a Redditor

Today, I learned about RedditGetsDrawn, and I drew a fellow Redditor. You can click here to see the original request. considering that it’s been years since I actually drew anything beyond a quick sketch, or layout diagrams, I’m pretty happy with the results.

I started by importing the picture into Photoshop and using it to draw a frame.

Then I hid the picture and reworked another frame on top of it, embellishing where I felt the lines needed to be different.

Sadly, at the end of the day, the picture doesn’t look much like my original subject, but I’m still really happy with it. I like drawing in a digital format so much more than I did in analog. I think it’s because everything is forgivable in digital. Lines can be erased, although I rarely remember that in the moment. Entire layers of depth can be quietly slipped in underneath work you’ve already laid down. During the drawing process, certain elements can be dialed down so you can focus on other things, then dialed back up when you’re done.

I bought a wacom tablet for work stuff, and it’s been an invaluable tool when doing layout, but it’s also really fun for this kind of work as well.

Bonus: I call it How to Lion.

I made it in order to illustrate how breaking complicated things into their component shapes can really help keep shit in proportion as well as perspective, but then I went and fucked up his mouth. It looks like he’s been freshly punched.
